Astronomy Citizen Science Projects – HS Cross Curriculum
Science has not always been considered a profession. Investigators used to be wealthy people who observed and wrote things about our world as a hobby. Beginning in the nineteenth century, governments and academic institutions started providing funding for science, soundly establishing the career of ‘professional scientist’. With this distinction between people paid to do science and mere hobbyists, it became harder for people without a formal scientific education to contribute to the field and publish their work. But, in the past few decades, collaboration between professional scientists and the public has increased, opening up opportunities for so called “citizen scientists” to make an impact by volunteering their time, resources (like computer processing power), or eyes! Read below for how you can participate in science right now!
